5 THINGS TO LOOK FOR WHEN CHOOSING A CHIROPRACTOR

5 THINGS TO LOOK FOR WHEN CHOOSING A CHIROPRACTOR

While most people do their due diligence when researching health care providers; sometimes we get too busy, or we don’t know where to begin. Chiropractic is especially difficult to determine what clinic is the best fit for yourself and your family because the treatments can be very different from office to office. It is difficult to determine where to go when you need quality chiropractic care, that’s why we’ve decided to make you a check-list.

Here are 5 things you should look for when choosing a chiropractor.

1. Private Adjusting Rooms

In recent years, chiropractic clinics are turning to open room treatments. While this is perfectly legal, it’s not always the best option. You want an office to have a completely private treatment setting to feel the most comfortable and to discuss any concerns at any time with your practitioner. Privacy and patient outcomes should always be the top priority of any clinic.

2. Detailed Examination

A detailed examination is key to find not only where the problem is located, but what is causing the problem in the first place. In some chiropractic offices you are rushed through an examination at first, with a quick adjustment and out the door you go. This should not be the case. In order for any doctor to treat you effectively they need to conduct a thorough exam to uncover the root cause of the issue. Before you start care at any chiropractic clinic, make sure they have not only the procedures, but also the technology and equipment to conduct a thorough exam. Digital X-rays, thermography, and orthopedic tools are just a few things a potential patient should be looking for.

3. Pre and Post Measurements

Again, a detailed examination is key. A huge part of that examination are X-ray findings. X-rays are a great indicator on how and to what degree the spine has shifted. This needs to be done to take a look at what is actually going on with your spinal system. These also need to be interpreted accurately, and in a way for the patient to understand. The doctor should always sit down with the patient and patient’s family to go over the X-rays with them. It is a huge part of patient care that is often overlooked. Find a clinic that focuses on analytical findings, and pre & post measurements so you can actually see the progress you're making.

4. Local Involvement

Do the doctors that work in this office take initiative with community involvement? Are they in service organizations and participate in projects around town? Do they live in the community in which they practice in? If they do, more than likely they will have a vested interest in community health. Choose a chiropractor that lives in the town they practice in and puts service above themselves.

5.  Chiropractic the main Thing

When you look on their website or Facebook page is it flooded with weight loss program deals? Do they push supplements, vitamins, or protein powders more than chiropractic care? Some chiropractic clinics say they offer so much, you can’t tell if they are a chiropractic office, weight loss clinic, or a physical therapist. Many chiropractic clinics focus their attention and marketing on servces/products that aren’t affiliated with chiropractic simply to increase their bottom line. By not focusing the majority of their time and attention on quality examinations and treatments, patient care may be falling by the wayside. Make sure to choose a chiropractic clinic that unmistakably keeps chiropractic care the main thing.

Anyone taking an initiative to better themselves is heading in the right direction for their overall well-being. Again, it can be difficult to determine which health-care provider to go to for you and your family, we hope that this checklist helps with that decision to find a fit for your chiropractic needs.

Structural Correction? What is it?

Structural Correction? What is it?

Are all chiropractors the same? Actually…no! It may seem this way since most chiropractors practice the traditional form of chiropractic. Traditional chiropractic focuses on reducing pain, decreasing muscle tension, and increasing range of motion of joints. These things all have important benefits and can provide some pain relief.

At Align Chiropractic, we focus on a very specific form of chiropractic called Structural Correction. Our focus is to restore your body back to your normal structure. At some point, an accident or injury, commonly to the head and neck region, causes the body’s structure to shift into a locked and stressed position.

This new shift in structure can cause one leg to be shorter, hips and shoulders become uneven, twisting within the body, body leaning to one side, and for the head and neck no longer sit evenly above the shoulders.

This position causes stress on the entire body, speeding up the breakdown process. This can result in issues like disc and joint degeneration, osteoarthritis, and muscle pain. This degeneration continues with every move your body makes until you have the structure corrected back to normal.

If this shift is not corrected, we begin to see secondary conditions or symptoms that are related to this shift. Things like sharp-shooting pain, muscle weakness, numbness, extreme muscle tension, headaches, and much more. Until the structure becomes corrected these symptoms will continue to get worse. Although they may temporarily go away with medication, stretching, ice or other treatments...the CAUSE of the problem is still there.

An analogy we like to use is to think of two houses; one that is built straight and level, while the other has a shift in the foundation causing the house to lean off to the side. One of these houses can last a long time with little to no problems and one house will have tons of issues. Which house would you want to live in?

The house with the shift will begin to notice issues that are secondary to the shift. Things like difficult to open and close doors and windows, cracks in the walls, and squeaky floorboards.

If we don’t notice the issues are secondary to the poor foundation, we will spend tons of money repairing these issues, but once they are “repaired” they will only last so long, because the problem was never actually corrected. Once we restore the house back to its normal structure, we can then begin to actually fix these problems.

The same thing holds true with your body. If there is a shift in the structure from normal, we will see secondary issues such as headaches, neck pain, vertigo, back pain, tight muscles, numbness, sharp shooting pain, etc. If we don’t know that these problems are actually caused by the shift in the structure, we will spend tons of time and money trying to resolve the problem. We may even find things that work for a few days, weeks, or months, but the problem will always come back.

At Align Chiropractic, we restore the body back to normal structure. Balancing the legs, shoulders, and hips, removing the twist in the frame, bringing the body back to standing upright, and bringing the head and neck over the shoulders. This is done with a very gentle and precise adjustment. Putting the body in a very stable structural position. This halts the degenerative process and allows the body to begin healing from the stress it was in.

How do we know if we have a shift in our structure? You can look for signs of a shift. Some of the easiest signs to notice are things like un-leveled shoulders, tight muscles in the head and neck area, having a foot that points in or out compared to the other, or walking with a limp. Although the best way is to get your structure assessed by a structural chiropractor.

We always offer complimentary consultations with the doctor. If you are interested in learning more or finding out if you have a shift in your structure call us at 952-595-6337.

Align Chiropractic in Lakeville, meet the Owner/Chiropractor Dr. Cody Rodewald

Summary

I have personally been to many and have worked at a few chiropractic clinics over the years but I have not seen this amazing technology before that Dr. Cody Rodewald implements into his business at Align Chiropractic. Even though Dr. Cody started his business early in 2017, he has seen great success in a short amount of time and fills a much needed void in the Lakeville area. I was excited to learn more about this budding entrepreneur and local Lakeville business owner so let's get crackin' (pun intended).

Describe your business

Align Chiropractic is a "structurally based chiropractic" facility where "engineering meets chiropractic care", said Dr. Cody. His goal for his clients is to "get better faster and to stay better longer."

What made you decide to open this business?

Back in high school, Dr. Cody suffered a severe hockey injury that was quite debilitating. Dr. Cody said he tried a variety of rehab and therapies but only truly felt like he was improving when he was being seen by a local chiropractor. From that time on, Dr. Cody wanted to share his success in treatment with others by becoming a chiropractor himself. Dr. Cody said he has family in the area and knew "Lakeville was it" for his new business and wanted to start his company here in Lakeville.

What has surprised you most when owning a business?

"Growing fast!" has surprised him and how successful his business has become in a short amount of time. Dr. Cody went on to say that he had to "wear every hat right away" to learn his business but like every successful entrepreneur, he is looking to start delegating many of the tasks that he doesn't have to handle himself. He said his goal is to "not work in but on" his business which is where most business owners should be focusing on.

What would your clients say they love more about your business?

Dr. Cody mentioned his clients love his one on one attention and the he "spends quality time with each of them." He works very hard at making his clients feel at home with personal touch and they are not just a number. He said he enjoys hearing a client say, "No one has ever told me this before" or "I've not felt this great in years.

What is something most people don't know about the business?

Dr. Cody should be very proud of his business model and how he's really brought in the future of chiropractic care to our area. Dr. Cody said most people don't realize how scientific and analytical chiropractic treatment is in today's time. Align Chiropractic has some of the top technology and combined with professional treatment, Dr. Cody should see decades of continued success in the area.

Do you have any exciting plans for the future that you want customers to know about?

Due to the growth of Align Chiropractic in Lakeville, Dr. Cody is starting to hire on more staff to help streamline his business so that he can spend more "valuable time" with each client along with his family. He also said they plan on hosting free community based events to help educate local residents. He mentioned a "Women's night" and "Athlete night" as a couple of his expected topics. Knowledge is power!

What do you like most about being an entrepreneur?

The ability to have his own business model and "treatment styles" were the driving forces behind Dr. Cody Rodewald in starting Align Chiropractic in Lakeville.

Do you have any advice that you want to share with other entrepreneurs?

Since Dr. Cody is a newer entrepreneur, he had a lot of great advice to share. "Be prepared to wear many hats", "always be optimizing your systems" and "focus your energy on what your differentiation factor is." I'm sure if you stopped by Align Chiropractic, Dr. Cody would love to chat more about his journey into becoming a business owner.

What are your favorite things to do in the neighborhood?

Dr. Cody and his wife like to try out what Lakeville has to offer. Lakeville Brewing Co is one of their favorites much like many local residents! Considering they have a 6 month old newborn, their time is limited but when they can, they will go to Lake Marion area every day over the summer if possible.

Why do you think it is important for people to shop local?

It is not "just the monetary benefits staying here but the overall confidence strengthens in the local community and economy." said Dr. Cody. This in turn helps the communities "grow within and not rely on other mean of generating income."

What do you love most about the neighborhood?

We get the big city amenities with a small town feel!

What actually goes into your supplements?

What actually goes into your supplements?

Follow this 5 step guide when making decisions on your supplement supplier.

I get the same question at least a dozen times throughout the week “ What supplements should I be taking? And how do I know if these supplements are any ‘good’?”

With the supplement industry being over a $30 billion industry in the United States annually, there a TON of questions regarding product legitimacy and importance. This short article will provide YOU, the consumer, the proper back ground information so that you can make a great decision regarding your supplement purchases.

The following steps are very basic, yet very crucial in determining the brand of supplements you should be taking. Of course, supplementation and vitamin intake when at all possible; SHOULD be accomplished through a proper diet and nutrition. But, if this is not an option, supplementing is a must.

1.      Do you know where the ingredients come from? Does the person selling you the supplement know where the ingredients come from for that matter? If not, PASS ON IT. You could be getting grounded up catfish oil that is being passed off as Omega 3s. Is this usually the case?-No. But it could be something very less than ideal. Your supplement supplier should know exactly where the ingredients come from. How exact? In our office we know the exact part of the Atlantic Ocean in which our fish are harvested that comprise our Omega 3 supplements. There is a science behind it. If your supplement company doesn’t abide by this science, you might be getting short-changed.

2.      Who sells it? What credentials do they have? Have you gotten an old friend text you out of the blue telling you that they have the “newest and greatest, healthiest super-food?” Also, if you want to sell it with them you could make $5,000 a month as a side job? More than likely these products are a part of a for-profit multi level marketing group and it is driven around sales, rather than product quality. When these companies recruit anyone under the sun to sell their product they are just going for numbers and quantity…highly neglecting QUALITY.

Your supplement supplier/salesperson/rep should have some sort of a degree in the associated field that qualifies his/her legitimacy. Would you let an unqualified person off the street fix the brakes in your car? What about put new tires on it? No, you would not.  It would be a safety issue if these things were to malfunction..the same applies with your body. If you put stuff in that is not quality, the effects and gains are going to be less than ideal and sometimes harmful. Pass on your friend who just got a side hussel job with no background in nutrition or physiology who is trying to sling you some super-food on the side…they don’t have any qualified measures to be making the important decision on what you put in your body.

Look for a company that works with healthcare professionals only. Such as doctors, physical therapists, chiropractors, physicians assistants, etc. By doing so, these companies KNOW that these individuals have the proper physiology and nutrition background to make qualified decisions with their products.

3.      Is there any research to back it up? The supplement industry is notoriously under-regulated. Some studies have been done where “big box store supplements” were dissected and the results were horrendous. Some of the supplements didn’t even contain the active ingredient in which it advertised to be the main ingredient….remarkable and discerning. Find a company that has research done on their particular products. Double blind, randomized control trials are the golden standard for supplement studies. Use companies who have their own research done on their own products, instead of someone else’s products from 15 years ago that they are trying to pass off as their own (it happens more than you think).

4.      What quality assurance initiatives do they have in place? Most of these supplement companies formulate a bunch of chemical reactions to extract the cheapest possible active ingredient and, presto! You have yourself a supplement. Like previously stated, the quality assurance initiatives in most brands are poor to non-existent. Quality assurance is an absolute must, not only so you get what you pay for; but so that it actually works! I don’t know how many times patients have told me they have been taking the same supplement for “years”. When I ask them if they have experienced any positive benefits associated with said supplement, I usually get a “Well, what do you mean?” or a “I guess I have never thought about it”. Are you one of these people who have been taking a particular supplement because someone told you a while back it would be a good idea? I’m not saying that you should waiver. What I am suggesting, however, is to audit the associated benefits you would be experiencing by now taking this particular supplement. Make sure to use a company with the utmost on-site quality assurance programs. The stricter the policy on the quality of supplements, the better the product.

5.      Are the claims unproven? Does the supplement “guarantee” weight loss. Does it promote enhancement of beauty and preventing old age? If it does, PASS. The only way to guarantee weight loss is to burn more calories in a day than you take in, all the while maintaining a balanced diet. You need to exercise, you need to eat right, and you need to drink plenty of water. This is the only way to guarantee any types of results in regards to weight loss. Enhancement and prevention are very subjective and are impossible to quantify accurately, if at all. On the other hand, are you taking a joint supplement that has an active ingredient of Glucosamine because of your joint pain? That would be a perfect example of what you SHOULD be doing. Always chose ingredients that are scientifically “tied” to a particular deficiency and/or disorder. Stay away from any product with outlandish claims and guarantees.

There you have it. I hope this short article provided you with enough information so you can formulate an accurate assessment when choosing your next supplement and supplement supply company. Have a great day!

Adjusting Babies: Follow Up.

We have received a bunch of positive feedback about our last post about adjusting infants.

When speaking to parents (or parents to be) about Structural Chiropractic care and maintaining their little one's spinal integrity they are always blown away by the importance of it!

Moms, remember the birthing process and how physically exhausting it was for you? Baby also experiences exhaustion and sometimes trauma. Especially when it is a long birth, or C-section birth.

Here is another study showing how the birthing process can create a #StructuralShift of the spinal column and lead to a myriad of symptoms. Sometimes the health issues with our babies isn't as complex as we might think. A lot of the times, their spine is simply out of place. Can your little one benefit from #StructuralCorrection?

Adjusting Babies? The research says yes.

A meta-analysis/systemic review of osteopathic manipulative therapy showed a significant decrease in length of stay in a hospital setting for pre-term infants.

This means that infants that were born pre-term and were adjusted came out of the "high risk" category FASTER than the infants that were not adjusted. Very neat stuff, we are just on the forefront of Chiropractic and Osteomanipulative research.
